Mac's Cats (and Dogs) Sponsor an Animal in Montclair, NJ with Special Needs at Cameron Animal Rescue

Mac’s Cats (and Dogs) is a special program, named for a very special boy. Lone Survivor was a single, sickly kitten with a clefte palate, who needed weeks of intensive nursing care to recover from his tough start. (Read Lone Survivor (aka Mac)’s history below.) In his memory, we ask people to sponsor individual animals who have special medical needs, which may include – treatment for severe illness or injury; treatment for congenital conditions; treatment for long term/senior health issues; and more.

Visit the profiles of the animals featured below. Each profile includes an introduction, a description of their medical needs, an explaination of their funding goals, and the opportunity to donate directly to them.

The Tale of Lone Survivor, the Kitten Who Lived

In true fairy tale fashion, Lone Survivor came to Cameron Animal Hospital on a dark and stormy night. He had been found in the gutter – a tiny, wet, malnourished, bedraggled kitten. He had one eye sealed shut, discharge from his nose, and a plaintive meow that couldn’t be ignored. It took two hours to warm him and get him to eat even a little bit, but a love story was born.

Over the next 4 weeks, Dr. Cameron personally nursed the kitten that he named ‘Lone Survivor’ on a daily basis- encouraging to eat and take his medicine, comforting him when he was sick, and teaching him to play when he was well. As he recovered it became apparent that Lone Survivor’s nasal issues weren’t just an infection – he had a clefte that narrowed one nostril. Although we worried about whether a kitten with such a unique appearance would be able to find a home, but those worries were wasted – he found a family who loved him more than we could have hoped for in our wildest dreams, and Lone Survivor became Mac.

Mac found himself a member of an adoring, expanding family, with both four and two legged siblings, and he thrived. He soon became an ambassador for special need animals, raising awareness online and in person.
Although he is no longer with us, Mac lived an incredible life, surrounded by love, and he is proof, that despite inauspicious beginnings, a unique appearance, or special medical needs – animals can thrive and be loved, and give an incredible amount of love in return.
