Cameron Animal Rescue was born out of a legacy of compassion. Since 1936, Cameron Animal Hospital has been a pillar of care in the Montclair community, offering a helping hand to injured strays, surrendered pets, and animals in need. Dr. Cameron followed in his father’s footsteps, taking over the hospital in 1970 and quietly adopting out hundreds of animals over the years. In 2024 Dr. Houston founded Cameron Animal Rescue, a registered non-profit, which has continued the rescue work done by the hospital. Our story began with love, and that love continues to guide everything we do.

Cameron Animal Hospital has helped to rescue animals since its founding in 1936. That work has largely been self-funded. However, as the need for rescue help has increased, costs have also increased, and that is no longer financially sustainable. Forming an official 501c3 non-profit will allow community members to make tax-deductible donations to the rescue to support its mission, and ensure it will continue and thrive.

The adoptable animals in Cameron Animal Rescue come from a wide range of places. Many are strays found in areas that do not have animal shelter access, or where the animal shelter is overwhelmed. Many are from local animal shelters, and have medical needs that the shelters are not prepared to care for. Some are owner surrenders when owners can no longer care for their animals for a variety of reasons.

Cameron Animal Rescue helps animals in need in a variety of ways – through directly rescuing and finding homes for animals in need, with a special focus on neonatal kittens and animals with medical needs that other shelters and rescues are less able to treat; by providing long-term care for animals that Dr. George Cameron admitted to a sanctuary program specializing in stray cats that could not safely remain where they were living, but are too feral to be adopted; by providing significantly discounted veterinary care to local shelters and rescue groups to make medical care more affordable; discounted/charity care for seniors.

Cameron Animal Hospital has carried out its rescue efforts through self-funding for many years. We do not receive public or private grants, and rising costs paired with increasing demand have made this approach impossible to maintain.

Cameron Animal Rescue now depends on community support to keep this work going. Gifts of any amount — whether it’s $1 or a larger contribution — make a meaningful difference. Donations of supplies such as food and towels also help us care for the animals who need us most. Your support allows us to continue this important mission.

Unfortunately, due to insurance restrictions, Cameron Animal Rescue can not use foster homes, and because we are based in a working animal hospital, we can not have direct volunteers. People can assist in many other ways, including donation drives for pet food, towels, toys, etc.

Cameron Animal Rescue receives thousands of requests for help per year. Unfortunately we are not able to directly assist every single animal that we are asked to help, however we will do our best to connect you with a shelter or rescue group who can help you if we are unable to do so.
